Although the thoughts and rituals may seem quite strange, psychologists believe that they developed for good reasons - usually as ways for a child to get through a difficult situation.

What is the evidence for this thought being true? Breathe in slowly, smoothly and fully. Eating disorders develop through using food to cope with painful situations or feelings, or to relieve stress. If you are in a situation where you dont need to take any physical action, such as in a queue or driving a car, then that oxygen will stay in your system and add to your uncomfortable sensations.
